studied fine arts, literature and comparative religion at Oxford and Columbia Universities and has written extensively on the art and culture of Tibet and the Himalayas.

Recognized by the National Georgraphic Society as one of six "Explorers for the Millennium", his previously published works include The Tibetan Art of Healing (Thames & Hudson, 1997). He lives in Kathmandu, Nepal, and has been a student of Tibetan Buddhism for more than twenty years.
