Buddha Sakyamuni on Mucilinda
Detail: Body close-up

Buddha Sakyamuni, is shown seated on the coils of the seven-Headed
serpent, Muchalinda. Buddha sits in the Virasana meditation position.
His upper-body uncovered and his elongated earlobes reflecting his
royal origins. Wearing a crown, necklage and bracelets giving him a
refined appearance. Buddha’s hands are hold in Samadhimudra, the pose
of meditation, and a lotus bud lies in his palm. The serpents hood is fanned
out behind and above the Buddha to protect him. The hood and coilled
body of the serpent are made with enormes detail showing all the charateristics
of the early Bayon style. The Buddha and Naga hood were cast seperatly
by the lost-wax process. Two bronze pens on the back of the Buddha, fits
neatly into the slots of the Naga hood. Visual and stereomicroscopic
examination shows us the Malachite and Azurite corrosion layers.
