3. Sariputta

Sariputta

Sitting in a devotional attitude towards the Buddha. The figure of lacquered and gilt and set with small pieces of mirror and colored glass. About 1850. He was one of Buddha's chief disciples, being second only to Sariputta (who sits on the right-hand side of the shrine: both were said to have been born on the same day and have been childhood friends. Although they had wealthy parents, they both took up the wandering life until they met the Buddha and were ordained by him. Shortly after this he appointed them his chief disciples. Moggallana was second only to Sariputta in wisdom, and both were entrusted by the Buddha to keep the doctrine pure. While Moggallana was holding the principalship, Sariputta was the Buddha Chief of Staff.
