carved polychrome wood and ivory

Madonna with Child

The Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus with her left arm is one of the most widespread iconographies of the Madonna. The body of the saint is wrapped in a triumph of drapery: her long red tunic has soft, linear folds which rest gently on her bare feet; her blue-green cloak is attached to her clothing, encircling her waist, wrapping around her on the right and enveloping her left arm at the end. A veil rests naturally on her head, covering her hair. The Infant Jesus is wearing a simple, light-coloured garment. His gestural expressiveness appears to grant a sacred blessing.

This magnificent sculpture has been produced in lacquered, gilded teak and sculpted in full relief. The face, hands and feet of the Virgin and Child and the four faces of the angels have been produced in ivory.
