The Tiger in Asian Art: Symbol of Power and Protection

Asia House, Main gallery
63 New Cavendish,
London, United Kingdom
Nov 05, 2010 To Feb 12, 2011

Detail: For the people of Asia, the tiger is an enduring and powerful symbol of cultural identity. It has inspired countless legends, beliefs, poems and works of art. The tiger is now the most threatened animal species in the world, a potent reminder of the vital need to preserve wild life and protect natural environments around the globe.
The exhibition will present Asian paintings, sculptures, textiles, photographs and other works of art, drawn from the British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum and private collections. From historical to contemporary, the exhibits will cover many Asian countries and regions, including India, China, Japan, Korea and South East Asia.
An exciting events and education programme includes an Asian Art in London study day (13 November) on Tiger Symbolism in Asian Religion with renowned academics and speakers including Martin Palmer, John Carpenter, Zara Fleming, Susan Conway and Anna Dallapiccola.
