Chinese New Year woodblock printing is a form of folk art that can be traced back to the Tang dynasty. The thematic topics of the prints, with the purpose of warding off evil spirits and of festive celebration, are good reflections of historical and social changes in China. The talk will examine the cultural significance of Chinese New Year prints from different periods and regions.
