Bodies in Balance: The Art of Tibetan Medicine

Rubin Museum of Art
50 West 17th Street New York,
New York, New York, USA
Mar 15, 2014 To Sep 08, 2014

Detail: Bodies in Balance features approximately 140 works of art dating from the 9th to 21st century depicting this transmission of knowledge, including beautifully rendered manuscripts, paintings, works on paper and wood, and sculptures, as well as medical instruments and medicinal ingredients and compounds.  The exhibition also includes a new, large-scale installation in the
Museum’s main staircase, drawing visitors up through the space.

Building on the individualized approach of Tibetan medical treatments, Bodies in Balance provides audiences with ample opportunity to have a tailored exhibition experience. Using a brief questionnaire, visitors will determine to which of three humors that govern the body—wind, bile, phlegm—they most strongly relate, and follow a color-coded pathway that highlights the exhibition components that are most relevant to them.  The pathways extend beyond the Bodies in Balance galleries and into other exhibitions on view as well as the café and shop, where diverse possibilities to influence the humors are available. The exhibition also includes videos and touchscreens throughout the exhibition space to provide additional background information on overarching concepts and specific humor-related elements.
