Detail: Borobudur: The land of Buddha
“The magnificent stone temple of Borobudur was built between the end of the 8th Century and the first half of the 9th Century. Once upon a time, it bustled with pilgrims from all over Asia. With the fall of the ruling dynasty, though, Borobudur also faded from memory. It slumbered for many years in the dense forests of central Java until discovered again in the 19th century by an Englishman hunting tigers. Borobudur is shaped like a pyramid. The walls of its square platforms are adorned with thousands of reliefs depicting scenes from Buddhist tales. These scenes are said to contain up to 10,000 figures, each bursting with expression. Human figures are joined by angels; by elephants, monkeys, rabbits, swans and a host of birds and beasts; by Kiṃnara and other mythical spirits from India; and by various trees, flowers and plants. All of creation is here, protected by Buddha’s boundless compassion. Through joy, sadness and pain, they celebrate life in all its aspects.” (Tomohiro Muda)
