About Jian Jun An

Jian Jun An’s paintings sit at the crossroads of what he calls the “lifeblood essence” of his native China’s culture and the vitality that he finds in Western art. Depicting scenes taken from daily life, the artist combines his observational skills with a distinctive style of painting to create images that are both realistic and expressionistic. Working in acrylics on canvas, he mixes intense colors with a dynamic sense of line and movement to give his works a bristling energy.

“I constantly experiment with many different materials and explore the many varieties of the language of painting,” he says, and that adventurous spirit animates all of his work. Even when his compositions are balanced and harmonious, the charge given off by his free-form lines adds intensity and spontaneity. His unexpected color combinations also heighten the tension, and lend his works a feeling of depth and a vibrant surface texture. But these paintings go well beyond the surface, serving as way for the artist to convey “feelings of happiness, anger and sadness” that come compellingly across to the viewer.

About Xinyu Zhang

Xinyu Zhang creates mysterious compositions from ink, balancing color and monochrome in dynamic washes. Innovatively alluding to a cultural past, Xinyu Zhang's abstract work combines fields of acrylic and ink with lines to create creature-like forms, defined just as much by negative space. Lines and dots of texture contrast the fluid movement of the ink, balancing pattern and variety in the ambiguous scenes.

Raised in the Hunan Province in China, Xinyu Zhang is inspired by classic Chinese poetry. She integrates varied techniques into her work, for instance mounting rice paper on stretched canvas.
