About Jieting Chen

Using watercolor on paper, Jieting Chen paints images that balance negative space with color in explorations of expression and the human form. In her works, multicolored paints become the basis for sensitively painted women, coaxed out of a careful balance of water and pigment. Often pensive, the figures in Jieting Chen's work are delicately formed from blending and bleeding warm and cool hues, often divided by fine lines of white to bring a faceted aspect to each piece. Geometric shapes frame and counteract the figures, describing the interaction between internal emotions and external environments. Deep, cool blues articulate each figure, contrasted and emphasized by warm reds that draw out a flush on noses, hands, or shoulders. Jieting Chen often restricts her work to primary colors blending and overlapping amorphous shapes to create an underlying complexity.

Working from New York, Jieting Chen creates work that draws from Chinese painting traditions and incorporates a feminine perspective. She uses water as much as the paint itself to imbue each work with character and space, emphasizing the contrast between softness and hardness with each of her pieces.

About Tao Jiang

Tao Jiang's paintings on paper and canvas draw from Chinese folk art, the Bible, nature, and real life scenes to inspire a sense of poetry and faith in her viewers. Jiang tackles a variety of subjects in her works, from biblical scenes to landscapes to still lifes. In this endeavor, she utilizes colors that deviate from reality only subtly, and only in order to emphasize the natural beauty of her subjects, reflecting her interest in the European Impressionist masters. “These works are inspired by the beauty of nature and are meant to praise the greatness of the Creator,” the artist says.

Working and living in Vancouver, Canada, Jiang was born in China in the 1970's, where she studied at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Today, she makes great use of her education, background, and intellectual interests by effortlessly combining the worlds of traditional Chinese art, folk art, and Western art history to produce her stunning portraits of those things beautiful and transcendent. Somewhere between these various traditions, Jiang presents her own style and voice in captivating expressions of her inner sincerity and worship.
