Yvonne Lu’s Macroscopic Photographs Tell Stories That Were Lost to Time

Agora Gallery
530 West 25th St, Chelsea,
New York City, New York, USA
Apr 26, 2016 To May 17, 2016

Detail: NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Taiwanese-born fine art photographer Yvonne Lu in Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography. Agora Gallery opens its doors for public viewing of this exhibition on April 26th with a reception on Thursday April 28th, from 6pm to 8pm. Admission is free.

About the Artist

Internationally acclaimed photographer Yvonne Lu explores liminal spaces and impressions from a completely unique perspective, approaching her subjects in ways viewers have never seen before. Her fascinating and gorgeously abstract Lost In Time series captures the rare Song Dynasty pottery known as Jun Ware, outlawed by Emperor Huizong and buried for thousands of years. Lu’s macroscopic photographs reveal not just the distinctive composition of Jun Ware – which was fired once at very high temperatures, forming a volcanic, planetary surface – but also how nature has shaped it over centuries, highlighting microorganisms that were trapped in the pottery when it was buried or curve lines encased in mud, created by rivulets of water running for millennia. One of the photographs from this series won Lu the Nikon Small World Image of Distinction Award in 2015.

In addition to her work as a fine art photographer, Lu is also a freelance assistant at Magnum Photos in New York City, where she currently lives. She says she is mostly influenced by her travels around the world and her Chinese heritage.

About the Exhibition

Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography

With both an international and a technical scope, Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography is a premier survey of the state of modern photography. The exhibition casts a wide net to find the artists creating the most visually innovative work. There are landscape photographers who transform the terrain into a living, brightly colored being by testing the limits of digital cameras. There are detail photographers who work within contemporary languages – including genres as varied as minimalism, expressionism, and pop – to bring a new kind of photographic work to light. And there are portraitists, who dive deep into their subjects to present psychological studies as well. Innovators and purists alike will find new aesthetic ideas to wrestle with in the collection. These are all artists working with traditional subjects to create modern views of the world around them.
