Conference/Symposium - Europe & Africa

Encounters Between Chinese and Western Art

The Museum of East Asian Art
12 Bennett Street,
Bath, United Kingdom
May 19, 2017

Detail: Speaker: Dr Zhu Ling (Chinese painting specialist, Lyon & Turnbull)

Western art has provided a significant impetus for the transformation of Chinese painting in the modern period. Almost every Chinese painter who has achieved fame in the 20th cent. has lived in Europe, or at least studied Western art in China.

There are two waves to this Chinese absorption of Western influence: one in the 1920s and 1930s, the other in the 1980s after the Cultural Revolution.

This talk discusses the works of some key twentieth-century Chinese artists and how they injected new blood into the tradition of Chinese painting by incorporating this Western influence.
