A Sarpech from Gwalior Royal Family, India

Sarpech refers to a Turban ornament placed on the front of the Turban, introduced by the early Mughals in India as a sign of royalty and power. Originally worn as a rare Egretta or Heron head feather, as the Sarpech took on greater importance it turned into extravagant presentations in gold set with Precious gemstones. These earlier gold Sarpech were magnificent single design such as the one here pictured set with a very large Golconda Diamond and two Columbia Emerald bead dangles. Tiny Spinel and a Bashara Pearl with Egretta feather complete this powerful ornament.
