1968-75 Kiel University, Staatsexamen (B.Ed., Class I) in Chemistry and Biology. Thesis: Polarographische Analyse von Kupfer-oxo-vanadaten-V.

1972-81 Universities of Kiel, Cologne, and Bonn, Dr.phil. in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Indology, and Anthropology. Thesis: Die Tabla im Gharana des Ustad Munir Khan (Laliyana) - Studien zum Trommelspiel in der nordindischen Kunstmusik.
