Seal Ring depicting Uma Mahesvara
Detail:
A carnelian delicately carved with Uma Mahesvara (the figures of Siva and Parvati). Siva is four-armed and holds in his upper arms a battle axe and a deer, his lower left hand forms abhayamudra. Parvati sits on his lap and they are both seated on a waisted plinth resembling bronze sculptures of this period. An inscription reads 'Peru Ma-Lu' which is possibly the name of the original owner. The gold mount is European and dates to circa 1810.

Provenance: private English collection since early 19th century. Last owner Dr S Rajavalu, Assistant Epigraphist of the Archaeological Survey of India at Fort St George, Chennai.
