Noh costume, kimono of noshime type

Quite different from the luxurious brocade costumes, this simpler kimono appears on the Noh stage in the comic interludes called kyogen which contrast with the dramatic episodes. It is worn under a sleeveless vest and tucked into large trousers. This supple silk robe shows wide transversal indigo stripes and bands of small checks in a bold geometric scheme; the blue and white palette is very popular in Japan especially in the everyday working clothes of ordinary people. This costume is similar to the noshime worn by samurai class men as formal wear, though in that case, it would have mon and the decor is limited to a central horizontal band.
