Subject:Makuzu Kozan Ewer
Posted By: keith jennings Tue, Aug 09, 2005

Dear Mr. Lee,
I recently acquired this wine ewer which was made by Makuzu Kozan and was hoping for some opinions on dating. The ewer has an under glaze blue signature on the side of the pot, a friend kindly translated the kanji for me as Tenkabi Sho (written by Tenkabi), he thought it was a pen name - do you recognize the name? Thanks for your help, keith

It is not a pen name, but the name of a text or painting. The form is that of a hand scroll and that is the front cover title on the outside - Beauties of our world.

Dear Mr. Lee & Lloyd, Thank you for taking the time to post your opinions. What Mr. Lee has said makes sense, the underglaze blue decoration looks like the outside of a scroll. So I wonder if "Beauties of our world" is a painting, poem or some other writing, maybe one day I will find the piece that inspired the decoration. Thanks, keith

Keith,
A bit late but this lovely Kozan piece bears the mark used in the mid to late Meiji Period. I would be proud to add this to my collection

Dear Jim,

Thank you for posting your thoughts on the ewer, I really like it too. Here is a picture of another Kozan ewer in my collection.

Best regards,
Keith
