Subject:Japanese Print Book
Posted By: Stan Wed, Apr 09, 2008 IP: 66.31.125.244

I am looking at a Japanese woodblock print book for possible purchase. The seller has provided little info.

Below is the cover and one page (Toyonobu's "Fox Dance"). Given that the overall size of the book is 10.5 X 15 inches (about oban size), my guess is that this is a collection various artists. Likely, it was printed in the 20th century.

What is the title? Can anyone help or confirm my guesses?

Thanks,
Stan

I agree, its probably 20th century. The title is a bit difficult to read (your image is a little small), but I can make out "ukiyo-e school" so its probably something like "collection of ukiyo-e school works" or something similar. Are you sure its a woodblock printed book? It could also have been reproduced by another method. I'm not an expert in other print processes, but I know collotypes and the like can make excellent reproductions.

Thanks for your input. I've since decided to pass but I like following up on these things as a learning process.

The above images were provided by the seller and then it wasn't easy to get them. I tried to get a scan of the title page figuring it would have a date on it but the guy would only send what he wanted. I have a higher resolution image of the Fox Dance page but I doubt I could be certain that it is a woodblock print book as the seller says. Were I interested, I would handle it.

Thanks again,
Stan
