Posted By: William Parkinson Sat, Apr 12, 2008 IP: 208.201.231.161

Hello,
I would like some help identifying the signature and age of this nice Kutani plaque or plate. Thanks very much to anyone who can help me.
Best regards.

Your very nice plate is inspired by earlier Seto ware oil plates decorated with iron brown, copper green, and/or underglaze cobalt blue in so-called "picture" style. The earliest examples date to around 1780. Your plate, with more a 3-D picture effect is later, probably Meiji period. It could have been made in Seto, Kutani or possibly even Kyoto. If the blue is underglaze, that would favor Seto. If the blue is overglaze enamel, that would favor Kutani or Kyoto. Although not of great age I would certainly welcome it into my collection!

Dear Robert,
Thank you very much for your identification and information. It is most helpful.
The blue colors are not underglaze and not exactly an enamel either. More of a thicker, dimensional glaze than most enamels, but may be considered an enamel.

Can you, or any other viewers read the mark on the back?

Thanks for your help!

Best regards, William Parkinson
