Dear Pierre

Sorry, for late reply. I just forgot to look at your topic because of the jade topics at the top and bottom of yours.

Your Buddha image has characteristic of 2 over-sized palms, which is in the style of Mon Kingdom Buddha figures. This Buddha is possibly of 14-15th century Mon bronze figure of a standing Buddha performing a miracle by calming the ocean.

This Buddha have flame-like halo on the top of his small Aussaneesa ( Buddha’s special skull bone). This style of halo flame was started from Sukhothai Kingdom (1238-1448 ), and still be used for present day Buddha images production.

This Buddha image has 2 spurs in his back, he might be connected to the another decorative bronze piece like Bodi tree throne, parasol and/or heavenly scene.

Possible unfinished / damaged piece from the ancient Mon workshop and/or re-pro.

You can send this bronze figure to some lab for carbon dating.

Pls read the link below

Have fun

Dear Anita,

You just solved one of my biggest headache. (so to speak.)

I couldn't figure out why this piece did not fit with the style of any other Buddha images from the region it comes from.
I bought it a few years ago near Vientiane and it is not of Laos nor Thai style.

You are spot on...

Mon it is, and period (14th-15th century) is correct to.

But, what would a 15th century Burmese Buddha image do in Vientiane?

By following the link you mentioned, I noted the remark about the "archeological remains of a Mon settlement south of Vientiane", and that's exactly where my piece comes from.

The 2 spurs at the back where originaly connected but, like many other little things such as feet, ear etc... on this statue, it is broken.

You are of great knowledge, Anita. Thanks a million for your information.

Pierre

well, in point of my view this subject is poor fake, no art and recently made age (can be either months or years)!

sorry, for my previous comment, it seems possibly to be 19th century, Bangkok period instead! However with this such poor quality and condition, it shall be hard to find anyone likes this object!

Dear Sin...

Thank you for your comments.

Yes this piece might not be to anyone's taste as far as art is concerned, but one thing is for sure, it is old.

And like most of real old piece, it is broken here and there, coroded etc... unfortunately.

Anyway, I like it, mainly for it's rarity, and the sentimental value behind it.
Best regards,
Pierre.
