Subject:Tsuba: Your comments please
Posted By: Stan Thu, May 01, 2008 IP: 199.46.198.230

I like Japanese art but know little about tsubas. I am considering buying one. The attached tsuba is coming up at a local auction.

I note many tsuba have 3 holes as opposed to one like this one. Does this tell me anything? This one doesn't look like it has a samurai's mon in the design but I will begin researching that aspect this weekend.

Does this look like the real thing? If so, how much should I bid?

Thanks for your help,
Stan

Depending on the replies you get here, the "sword board"

http://www.militaria.co.za/nihontomessageboard/

should be able to give you a definitive reply. They even have a "tsuba" forum.

Jim,

Thanks for that link. I posted the above picture and got some laughs and other disparaging remarks. I won't be bidding on this one!

Thanks,
Stan
