Subject:Guangxu famille rose dish help needed
Posted By: Nicolas Turover Sat, May 03, 2008 IP: 81.224.122.152

Being new to this forum, I“m not quite sure where to
post this message so there“s more ore less the same message in the message board.
I am wondering if, in the opinion of the experts, this dish is time and period.
I purchased it about two years ago in an auction in
Sweden for 700 $.
It felt like a really good idea at the time but I am aware there are pretty good copies out there...
The diameter is 24,2 cm and the decoration seems to be consistent with the period.
I found a similar dish, although smaller on Sotheby“s database :
http://www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?lot_id=4J8ND
I am grateful for any help you can provide.
Thank you in advance
Nicolas.

This piece looks good, very likely dated to late Qing to early republic period. But I think the price is a tat on the high side.

Hi Ark
Thank you for your response.
Did you check the similar dish sold at sotheby“s on the thread mentioned above ?
It certainly felt a little costly when i won the bidding on my dish but I felt a little reassured when I found a similar one though of a lesser diameter ( 14,5cm) sold for 1200 £ at sotheby“s.
Chinese and Japanese work of arts part 2 London Nov 09/ 2005.
Or was the price obtained at sothebys totally out of whack ?
Any opinions most welcome
Yours,
Nicolas.

Nicolas,

Auction prices are a bit erratic, depending on the situation. I have seen pieces going for a few hundred dollars at one auction and to a few thousand dollars from the same auction house at another auction for the same pieces. It all depends on the mood, I guess.

Ark.
