Subject:Blue and White Porcelain Info Request
Posted By: Stig Sat, May 03, 2008 IP: 88.81.140.75

Greetings,

A few years ago I purchased a small porcelain bowl at a market selling second hand items. I bought it simply because I liked it and the quality seemed good for the small asking price. If held up to the light you can see the design through the porcelain because it is so thin. I think it is an artistic object.

Is this of Japanese origin and if so what would this have been used for? Is it old or would somebody in Japan use this kind of object today? What does the mark say?

Regards,

Stig

Hai Stig,

I think you're right... it's Japanese indeed, but I doubt it's a bowl but think it is a lid of a bowl. If I would guess for a date I would say about 1900. Sorry, can't read/translate the characters but have the feeling you must read them upside done.

best regards,

Arjan

This is Japanese Seto porcelain and is the lid to a bowl.

This is a set (saucer, bowl and lid)of my collection. It's eggshell Hirado porcelain, marked with "Hirado san Giei tsukuru".
