Subject:Chinese Stone Lion
Posted By: Carl Klempner Sun, May 04, 2008 IP: 71.184.10.114

I have a stone Lion that I purchased in 1968. It appears to be hand made and old. It is 9"h, 3 7/16" w and 2 1/2" d.
Any help with the age as well as other information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Carl

Hello Carl,

I will try to help you a little bit with this one, but not much I'm affraid.

Your Lion is a male one, holding a ball under his right paw, symbol of the flower of life.
Lions are placed in the front of the house/temple/palace. Male on the right hand side, female on the left.
Symbolicaly, the male is supposed to protect the dwelling structure, the female the dwelling inside

Your is with no doubt old and is either from the Ming or Qing dynasty.

According to the flower design at the base, I would say it is most probably 18th to 19th century.
