Subject:horse woodblock print identification help
Posted By: jennifer Wed, May 07, 2008 IP: 70.130.137.100

Hi, I have a set of 6 horse prints that I believe are woodblock. They are all very similar and look like the same artist, but there are 3 obviously different signature marks on these. If anyone can help identify these I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

I am just replying to this so I could post pictures of three of the prints with the three different signatures I previously posted. Again, any help greatly appreciated. Sorry about the flash glare!

2 of your prints are shown in the 1953 catalog from Kyoto Hanga-in / Shinagawa and attributed to Sonan Noda. Have a look at page 18 from this web-page: http://www.koitsu.com/Research/Catalogs/KHI/Catalog_C/Catalog_C.htm

Your third print is probably from the same source. Unraveling the significance of the different artist's signatures and seals has proven to be difficult over time for these horse prints. There is a note at the bottom of page 18 which says "Note: There are two more horses which make a pair (Vertical)."
