Hi Jim,

Starting with the second image, the characters woven into the edge of your tapestry read: "Hangzhounei Xihu" (West Lake in Hangzhou) and "Zhongguo Hangzhou Du Mianshengsi Zhichang" (China National Fine & Raw Silk Weaving Factory at Hangzhou Metropolis). There's no written reference to when it was manufactured, though the factory designation suggests the piece may date to around the mid-20th century or perhaps the pre-1949 Republic of China Period. Factories like this were assigned more regimented numerical designations during the 1950's, I believe.

Regards,

Bill H.

this is a scene of West Lake, Hangzhou (China), which is what the first set of characters say (Hangzhou nei Xi Hu). the second set give the name of the factory in Hangzhou that produced this tapestry

Want to emphasize Bill H.'s mention of 'woven'. This produced by automated weaving equipment, not embroidery, type still used today. Technology derives from inventions in France, method perfected before 1810 used in Europe, England, one of earliest forms of computer. Bill H. and 'Rat' correct about factory and timing.

Good luck,
Cal
