Hi Tom,
Some of this is redundant of my comment on Ger's Sumida Gawa vases in response to his Sep 17 posting. Your photos show a Sumida Gawa pottery basket vase with monkey decoration and a plaque bearing a potter's mark of Inoue Ryosai. The best book I know of on the subject indicates that the Ryosai name has been used by three generations of potters, Ryosai I, II and III. This reference is 'Sumida...according to us' by Herbert Karp & Gardner Pond' 2001. ISBN 1-57080-085-5.
Sumida wares generally date to the late 19th through early 20th century. The aforementioned book indicates that the earliest period pieces had bodies that were totally glazed with either a flambe or splashed multicolor glaze. I surmise that the partial glaze on your basket vase means it wasn't made during this early period, from about 1870-1910. Perhaps if you search 'Sumida' on the web you'll come up with examples that'll help you date yours more precisely. My book does not date its individual illustrations.
Good luck,
Bill H.
