Subject:Tea bowl iD #2
Posted By: AdamPR Mon, Sep 28, 2009 IP: 98.246.182.201

Here is another interesting bowl from the same collection as the others I recently acquired, I really am just starting to learn about asian ceramics, pottery and porcelain so any help is greatly appreciated. the animal figure in this bowl really intrigued me, 5 cm tall.

Thank you very much for your interest and valuable time, Adam

Hello, sorry, all of my pics were off on the color accuracy, I have fixed the problem and here are better photos. The porcelain is actually still quite a bit more clean bright white in reality than my camera will offer and keep the color correct, but it is close enough! Any thoughts on what the character in the center might be called?

Thanks, Adam

Definitely Japanese with a Japanese style Quilin in the center. Dating not too sure maybe second half 19th century.

Adam, I can help to the extent of saying the bowl looks to be Japanese stylistically, and the creature is the mythical Japanese Kirin (Chinese Qilin). I've downloaded a more detailed picture of the kirin from a Japanese bowl of mine.

Also included are images of a signed bowl I have in a decorative style quite similar to yours in its delicate pale blue brushwork. Its mark might possibly be read downward from the upper right corner as "Kyoto Suburu Bunshun Sei" (Made by Suburu Bunshun at Kyoto), however there are other potential transcriptions of the names. Nothing conclusive came out of my initial web searches of the characters, but I haven't had time yet to check them thoroughly.

Good luck to both of us,

Bill H.
