Chinese lidded pot painted with overglaze "wucai" enamels. Transitional period that is the period of the ship sinking. Comes in various sizes. Can also be found in blue and white style.

Hello Tati,

The galleon bearing your jar sank while the Kangxi Emperor (1662-1722) was on the throne in China. The sinking occurred in what also is called the 'Transitional Period', which the New York Metropolitan Museum (among others) defines as the interval between the death of the Ming Wanli Emperor in 1644 and the arrival at Jingdezhen of Zang Yingxuan to supervise the Imperial Porcelain Factories in 1683.

I'm including images of a repaired transltional jar of mine that's almost identical to yours in form except for the knop. I have another one a little larger in a Chinese Imari pattern with shell-shaped handles and a lychee knop, dating to around 1720. This basic form of jar was made for much of the Qing Dynasty I believe.

Best regards,

Bill H.
