Subject:brass/bronze? statues of warriors with signature
Posted By: Ashley Thu, Jan 28, 2010 IP: 68.115.157.218 I have recently acquired 5 statues that are cast in what I think is bronze. They stand roughly 15" high and have the maker's mark on the back but I cannot identify it. Each statue is unique and I would love to know more about them, who made them, and where they may have originated from. |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Jan 29, 2010 This statue seems to depict Wen Chang, the Chinese God of Literature, standing on the back of the dragon carp. Depending on which legend you believe, Wen Chang and Zhong Kui, the Demon Queller and patron 'saint' of scholars, may or may not be manifestations of the same deity. You'll find accounts of them at wikipedia.com and elsewhere on the web. |

Posted By: Ashley Tue, Feb 02, 2010 Thank you so much! I have 4 others and each of the four are different. One is standing with what I see as a deer, another is a man standing on a goose, one on a dragon/lion looking type creature, and one that is a large bald man that resembles a sumo wrestler. Perhaps you may know of a book that might offer me more information? I hate to abuse your kindness and generosity with the first statue but any additional information would help me SO much!!! I specialize in American furnishings so this has really thrown me for a loop. I'll take pictures this afternoon. -Ashley |
