Dear yurike

Three boys are wearing Manchu costume with long pony tail down the back tied up with ribbons. They are carrying a straw hat...the style is of the Qing Dynasty, it's possibly a candle stick holder.

Antique or not, I don't know. Pls wait for ceramic expert like Bill H,(not Bill jadelover),Anthony J Allen and Cal.

Have fun
Anita

I'm not sure if it's Chinese, Japanese or Korean, but if it isn't a candleholder, then it may be a cup stand of the type that's called 'hai dai' in Japan. The size is very similar to some of the Japanese types.

I've never dabbled in celadons seriously, so would be hard-pressed to guesstimate an age or origin. This is the kind of item I flip back to and stare at in my spare time, hoping I'll get a flash of recognition. Haven't seen any sparks yet.

Cheers,

Bill H.

I don't think there is much doubt it is Chinese, possibly an oil lamp, and although the pictures could be clearer, I suspect Ming dynasty.

Sorry to be a bit vague, but celadons can be difficult to date from a photograph alone.

This one is not Ming. It is 18th century Ching dynasty probably qianlong period. The foot has been painted with a dark iron glaze, typical of the period. The green is light apple green and thin, smooth glaze. The molding is too sophisticated to be ming. It is typical Ching dynasty, Qianlong period. Teadust gallery has a few examples under celadon.

Hi Yurike,
I should have checked my reference library first. There has been very little research published on Chinese celadon wares, and the pioneering exhibition by the Oriental Ceramic Society had very conservative dating parameters; eg Ming 14th to 16th centuries or just Qing dynasty (1644 to 1911). The Ming dynasty finished in 1644.

I did find these iron brown rims in a Chinese text, which appear to be dated to either Kangxi (1662 to 1722) or Yongzheng (1722 to 1735), so I may have been a little early in suggesting a Ming dating.

Regards
Tony
