This type of Japanese export ceramics from early 20th century was known to antique collectors as "Satsuma" for many years. Lately, due to the growing Japanese collector's interest in early export pottery and porcelain since Meiji, much more information is becoming available to us. Almost all of these so-called Satsuma type ware were produced in Nagoya, although the pottery or porcelain blank body brought from near by Seto, Mino and Kyoto, then, it was decorated by trained pottery painters hired from established kilns in Kutani, Kyoto or Arita. I think, this type of Japanese export ware from late Meiji to pre WWII, should be named as Nagoya export ware but not Satsuma.
Finally, what is this writing? It can be read, " Toshozan", totally fictitious made up name, I believe.
Besr Regards,
Emiko
