Subject:Crackleware Vase - Guan?
Posted By: Lisa Fri, Feb 26, 2010 IP: 207.200.116.5

I inherited this vase from my mother, but it had belonged to her mother-in-law before that. I don't know where it originally came from. It is about 13" high. I recently found some photos of Guan Ware that have the same type of crackle, and wondered if this is Guan Ware? If so, what does that mean? I couldn't find much about it. Should I take it off the dresser where the cat jumps? Thanks.

Hi Lisa,
Your crackleware vase usually called as ge type. Probably from Shiwan kiln of late 19 century.

Kind regard, Alf

Thank you, Alf. When I look at photos I can't tell the difference between Ge and Guan. I thought (based on photos online) that Ge had a dull, matte finish. Of course, I know nothing of what textures, shapes, sizes, etc. are from what kilns, or time periods, so your comment is appreciated. It is more than I knew before! Thanks again.
