Subject:Question for Emiko...... and others of course.

Hi Emiko (and all).

I think this is your area.
There is some discussion (on an other site) about my latest purchases. Herewith four, 20 cm, dishes I bought on an auction a few days ago. Can you please tel me what you think about it and did you ever saw such a reverse decoration before? (I keep my own mouth shut for the moment)

Regards,

Arjan

Hi Arjan,
Could you explain to me what you mean by a reverse decoration? It does not make any sense to me.

Hello Emiko,

I mean the decoration on the back as you can see on the last picture.

Thanks and regards,

Arjan

Hi Arjan,
O.K. I thought you meant some pattern in a reversed form.
A group of design motif on the back side of the plate, here, is consisted of various takara-mon ( treasure motif ), nyoitou ( a head of ruyi ), clouds, kakuremino ( magic straw cape ), kiri-hitoha ( one piece leaf of foxglove ) and maybe a shell. I would date this plate around 1716 – 1736, during Genroku to Kyoho period.

Hi Emiko,

Thanks, thats the confirmation I was hoping for. A few people have doubts and gouldn't place it because of the crowdy back decoration. Some thought they were Daishoji ware but that would date them to Meiji/early Showa while my own feeling was (also) 18th. century.

Regards,

Arjan
