Subject:Information on Japanese artist - Unpei?

I bought this image in Japan, but I do not have a lot of information on either the artist or the painting/drawing.

I believe his name was Unpei, and that this was painted in ink. Supposedly it was made around 1870 and it measures 1,5 m by 0,5 m.

Does anyone have information on the artist, the technique, etc?

Also, can anyone translate the japanese text?

The artist is Nagai Umpei (1833-99); studied in Nagasaki and China and worked in Tokyo and became a recluse in his old age (cfr. Roberts, A Dictionary of Japanese Artists).
