Subject:Japanese Print
Posted By: Lisa Tue, Mar 09, 2010 IP: 207.200.116.5

I have 2 prints that belonged to my father, I am posting them separately. I wondered if anyone could give me any information about them. This first is, of course, a famous scene(which I do not know, there seem to be several bridge/rain prints with different names that I can't tell apart0, but where my print fits into the many of them, I don't know. I only know that my father bought it from Japanese neighbors during WWII, for 50 cents. The neighbors were selling everything before the went to the internment camps. Sad chapter of history. Any comments are welcome. Sorry the photos are not very good, and I had to crop them to make them smaller.

This print is by Hiroshige and titled "Evening Shower at Atake and the Great Bridge" from his "100 Famous Views of Edo" series.

It does not look original to me but is likely a later reproduction.

Click on #52 on the page at the link below.

Cheers,
Stan

This is indeed a very famous print by a famous artist: Hiroshige's Ohashi Bridge in the Rain. This would have had numerous printings (the older the printing the better) and has also been widely reproduced. The colors look good on yours - there isn't much sun fading. I'll be interested to see what is said about how to determine how old a print yours' is.

Reproduction with recut blocks. Can find discussion of different editions with different rendition of boat(s). Yours not as subtle as original.

Enjoy as decoration.

Good luck,
Cal
