Small blue & white plate decorated with 4 crabs, grasses and fu.

Diameter : 17 cm
Height : 3 cm

Any comment on the probable age is most appreciated.

I think this is a 19thC plate from Fujian province & of a type commonly exported to South East Asia. These come, if I remember correctly, with motifs bearing between one & five crabs & some south east asian collectors value having complete sets but they`re not that uncommon.

Very nice anyhow.

Phil.

Hello Lee,

At first sight it looks older (Ming-like?) than it prabably is but my guess for this one is 19th. century, around Daoguang period.

Best regards,

Arjan

Hello Lee,

The foot has the texture and brownish color of other pieces I've seen and handled that were datable by characteristics of their decoration to circa the 1930's. I'm not certain but speculate that some of the kilns that made items with this tone of biscuit were being fired with coal or peat.

Best regards,

Bill
