Subject:Asian Vase?
Posted By: bryant Wed, Mar 10, 2010 IP: 75.207.20.64

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this vase. Origination? Style? Value? There are no markings that I know of. It measures 8 1/4" tall. Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Chinese. The generic theme of scenery with boys (not girls) at various activities is typical of wares made for a gift at auspicious time such as marriage.

Form is modern hodge-podge of shapes, not a particular style. Between 1950-1980 there was more emphasis on equality of women and men ("Boys Day" was renamed "Childrens Day"). But this does not look pre-WWII to me.

Despite the "one child" policy for most of the country, many couples longed to have more. The wish here is "many sons." It could be 1960s, but could be later.

Good luck,
Cal

sorry to disagree but rather than chinese to me this vase very much looks Japanese in shape, decoration, and the boys hairstyles. the potting is extremely thick, however, so perhaps it's a recent imitation of an older japanese ceramic style.

Hi Bryant & Cal.

That vase featuring a motif of 'karako' (Chinese boys) looks to be Japanese from this side of my eyeglasses, perhaps dating a dozen years before or after World War II and with Kinkozan-style Kyoto decoration on Satsuma-type stoneware.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Sorry Cal but I agree with the others: Japanese and late 1st quarter or second quarter of rhe 20th century.

I should have collected new eyeglasses before reply, not after.
