Subject:odd porcelain piece

5 3/4" x 7/8" chinese tray or box lid for ink. At least that is what it appears to be. There may have been another piece that this would have been placed upon. I just don't know. Any thoughts?

Hello,

Well, I think you solved the mystery yourself. This indeed seems to be the lower part of a lidded box. Often in two parts sometimes in more stages as you can see on the second picture.

Your assumption that it was an ink box (for painting) seems perfectly correct to me.
The other tiered box was to keep food hot, and has nothing whatsoever to do with painting.

Tony is right of course. I just wanted to show a lidded box/container with more stages but that has nothing to do with ink or painting.

this is not a lid nor a storage box for ink but an inkstone itself with a ceramic grinding surface, the recessed round pool around the grinding surface for water, the lid missing. lots of fakes on the market these days.
