Subject:2 figures from China?

(I posted the photos for the wooden figure separately.) I have these 2 figures that I think my grandmother brought back from China years ago. One is made from what my family calls soapstone. It is 4" tall. The other is wooden, 7" tall. The wooden one does have some damage, missing a piece off the chair, and off whatever is in his hand. I am not sure if his other hand is supposed to be empty or not. The back has a piece that comes off, with a crude hole under it. To hide something? I don't think so, it is too obvious. Does anyone know anything about these two figures? They have been in my family for several generations (my grandmother, and before her, her father, both traveled to China), but no one has ever wondered enough about them to try to find out more. Of course, they didn't have the internet and places like this! Thank you.
