I suspect this piece -- nice as the carving is -- is mid 20th century at the oldest. The patina seems applied, and there are no signs of wear or handling.

Hmmmmm. The bat is a symbol of good fortune in Chinese iconography. I am not sure about Japanese lore. That and the lack of apparent wear lead me to believe that this is very modern.
