Subject:Japanese Buddha inscription translation
Posted By: M Mon, Mar 22, 2010 IP: 71.233.149.27

Hi, folks. I recently acquired this wooden Japanese Buddha from a sale in Japan. The inscription on the bottom is eluding me, though. I've been able to make out 道; and 岸 but that's about it. Any insight would be much appreciated!

Best wishes,

-M

I'll have a go at this.
The first line means Saga-gun, Kishigawa-mura, a place name.
The first two characters of the second line seem to be Saishoku(?)= colour; possibly a name. The second two are a title Buddhists frequently used to call a man who is not a monk (meaning donor or client, etc.). The third line Doi could be another name. Sounds to me like a monk's Buddhist name?

Thanks for the information! I am sensing that there isn't a date mentioned in the inscription, then?

It's been difficult for me to date this piece, since it's single-block construction and provincial in appearance/make.
