Subject:Trick Ivory Netsuke
Posted By: Gerry G Sun, Mar 28, 2010 IP: 87.232.127.234

Hi,

Can anyone tell me more about this netsuke I recently acquired, especially the signature so I may date the piece more accurately. He was sold to me as an ivory Netsuke Ino probably made around 1900 give or take 10 years. He's certainly a cheeky chap and although the carving might not be anything wondrous, I believe many trick netsuke makers put most of their efforts into designing the trick device which is certainly the case with this one. His comically large tongue stays hidden even when you place him on a flat surface and will present itself with only a light tap on his head which I think shows an in-depth understanding of balance has been incorporated into the design which is a feat in itself, maybe a former sword smith!

Any/all comments would be gratefully received.
