Subject:Korean bowl ?
Posted By: dorrbell Mon, Mar 29, 2010 IP: 64.142.87.237

20 cm x 7 cm celadon bowl. I think this is Korean. There is no incised design. The foot does show sand residue as well as a small chip on the edge of the foot exposing a light grey paste. There is a lot of what I call "chopstick" wear on the bottom of the bowl. It is slightly out of round. This bowl was given to my late father about 25 years ago by a collector who said it was Korean. So there you are. That is the sum of my knowledge about this bowl. I would love to hear any and all opinions about this piece; origin, age, etc.

This is a plain Goryeo celadon bowl, I believe made during 11 century. The quality of the glaze in this century relatively low and many pieces have yellowish tint color due to firing problem (celadon fired in reduction).

Their glaze quality become much better in late 11 century/early 12 century and the famous jade green/blue-green celadon glaze appeared in the first half of this century, and finally they made sanggam (inlaid) celadon)in the second half of 12 century.

Kind regards, Alf
