Subject: authenticate a antique scroll painting
Posted By: LEE Thu, Apr 08, 2010 IP: 121.45.31.15

This seems to be a common request. The basic way to authenticate a Chinese painting is first to examine the weave of the painting. This can be done with a 10X magnifying glass. The typical old weave comprise of two vertical string twilling around a horizontal string. There is some space between the weave. The silk used in different periods are different. Pic 1 shows the silk weave of a Kangxi period painting notice the 2 smaller vertical string twilling around a larger horizontal one and space between the weave. Pic 2 some pigment colors that are not water soluble and worn out and are found only between the weave- eg the pink, white, blue and green pigments. Pic 3 the old paintings have good expression and the colors are right. Pls can Some other experts can add to this.
