Subject:An unknown Utagawa - Utagawa Naomasa
Posted By: Ron Valle Thu, Dec 18, 2003

Hello, I have had this book for some time and still cannot find any info about the artist. I believe the signature reads 'Utagawa Naomasa' but I have never heard of him and I cannot find any info on that name. Can anybody out there help me out? Any info about the book or artist would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron Valle

Ron,

Naomasa isn't quite unknown - I've found information about him in a couple of Japanese reference works. As you may have guessed, he was a pupil of Kuninao. He was active as a print designer from the 1830s to the 1850s, but not much else seems to be known about him.

Best regards,
Hans Olof

Thank you for the reply,
I appreciate the info. What I need to do is get ahold of a few reference books. Do you have any suggestions for comprehensive ukiyo-e artist reference books that are not so difficult to locate?
