I would be grateful if anyone can shed some light on a framed pen & ink drawing on rice paper which I found in a junk shop. It is obviously old, possibly c.1900 and has a label on the back of the frame saying 'Staples, dealers in fine art, Bromley'. The subject appears to be a male bearded figure, seated under palm trees. There are Japanese/Chinese (forgive my ignorance) characters by one of the trees and a stamp in the bottom left-hand corner, also with similar characters. Although it is not the most attractive of pictures, it is obviously finely painted. I am intrigued by the picture and would be very interested to find out more about it. Thanks for any opinions received.

this looks like a 1920-1940 era reproduction (lithograph?) of a Chinese painting by who, Wu Sheng maybe? no, must be someone else I don't recognize. the cyclical year is most likely 1924; the inscription by the painter dedicates the painting to a friend on his birthday and wishes this person long life

sorry not be clearer with the inscription but I dont have a lot of time. the figure is hard to see from your photo but might be a lohan (luohan) under a tree. Thank you for taking the trouble to send some additional information relating to my query. I have followed your suggested link and agree that there is a distinct similarity between the robed figure in my picture and the Lohan illustrated. I now feel I have something on which to base my research and will hopefully be able to investigate it a little further.
