I'd appreciate any comments or information on the pictured bowl including the markings or signature on the bottom. I purchased this over 30 years ago in Japan, it was expensive and was indicated to be pre Imari Japanese and I recall some name like Hashiroh-E?

In Japanese "e" simply means "picture". An "hashira e" then is a "post picture" (hashira = pillar or post) or a long picture traditionally hung on the interior posts of Japanese homes.

Not sure how that relates to your bowl. Maybe there was a reference to something else you were purchasing at the time?

I never heard of "pre Imari".
This style is called Aka-E (red picture) and is probably from Kutani origin. My guess for an age; second half 19th. century as oldest.

Thank you that is helpful. I looked at some Kutani wear examples and found the one below late 1800's similar to my bowl by a potter named indicated as Kaba Kutani. If I could find someone who could translate the inscription on mine it would be helpful as would some indication of likely value. If you have any comments they would be appreciated. I will try to repost larger photos of my bowl.

The geographic mark reads 'Kutani'.

As suggested in my former post; your bigger pictures shows me now the mark that indeed reads "Kutani".

To compare you can make an internetsearch on "Aka-E Kutani".

This is a closer picture of the hanko on ther bottom of the bowl. If anyone can translate this it would be helpful to identify this furt3her.

You probably didn't understand me in the other posts.

The inscription on your bowl reads Kutani.
The same for the two characters on the left of the one you found and showed above. The first character (on the right)of that one reads "Ka" Could be Kaba, but I don't know and never heard of it.

ps. in this context I would expect "KAGA" but second character seems different.

Thanks for your responses. I also would have expected it to be Kaga Kutani, but I've also read that often the inscriptions are not clear. Again, thanks for your help.
