Subject:Help with Japanese print markings
Posted By: Bill Tue, Jun 26, 2012 IP: 67.82.212.46

Hi. I could use some help with these Japanese print markings. I believe the print is from the first half of the 20th century, but just not sure. Thanks for any help you might have, Bill

This is a print by Kawase Hasui, one of the most prolific - and well-regarded - shin hanga artists.

The cartouche is the seal of the publisher - Watanabe Shozaburo. This is the so called "D" seal, in use from 1931-41.

The writing on the margin is basically just the title of the print and the date.

In this case the title is "Kaiganji Beach, Sanuki". And the date is Showa Ku (Showa 9) or 1934. And the month of May (go gatsu).
