Subject:Very Old Japanese Watercolor c. 1890's (?) Signed Kano Shunsen Tomonobu (?)
Posted By: Josh Sun, Jul 01, 2012 IP: 96.41.74.201

Hello i recently purchased this from a fine estate. It appears to be an original watercolor and is signed. I believe it is from the late 1800's (i also bought a nice pair of chinese vases c. 1890 from the same home) i showed this to a japanese friend (not knowledgable in japanese art) who at first translated the name to harukawa tomonobu but then said since it was older japanese the name translated to kano shunsen tomonobu who from what i understand is an important figure in japanese art. curious if anyone may have any information regarding the artist, date etc. thanks! i appreciate your time

Signed 'Shunsen Tomonobu hitsu'.
The artist is kano Shunsen Tomonobu (1843-1912). Kano painter born in Edo (Tokyo).
His another artist's name was Isseisai. He was the eldest son of Kano Tosen (?-1871). Tomonobu studied under Kano Tadanobu (1823-1880) and also studied western painting under Kawakami Togai & Wirgman. Tomonobu acted in Kanga-kai of Ernest Fenollosa. Not mentioned in Roberts 'A dictionary of Japanese Artists'.

Guy.
